Urban Agriculture Week: How a SmartFlower supports Urban Farm We Grow Microgreens

Yesterday, SmartFlower technical director Matt Lipsitz hosted a SmartFlower demonstration at We Grow Microgreens, an urban farm with a mission to share their love for horticulture and educate the community on the power of growing your food.

This demo was part of We Grow Microgreen’s celebration of Urban Agriculture Week at their Hyde Park farm on August 12th. The event consisted of a jam-packed schedule that included farm tours, insect displays, a microgreen growing class, and of course, the SmartFlower Demonstration.

During the SmartFlower demo, Matt explained how the SmartFlower works, the technology inside of a SmartFlower, and got to open and close the SmartFlower to show the SmartFlower in action. A sunny August day was perfect to show off the SmartFlower—it was moving with the sun and generating lots of power for the farm! Using the SmartFlower, the farm is able to power essential equipment, like grow lights and refrigeration units.

The presentation was about an hour long, and once it ended folks gathered around the SmartFlower to ask Matt more questions about how it works and how it can be useful for urban spaces like We Grow Microgreens. Attendees were fascinated by the SmartFlower’s shape and even took a group photo in front of it!

The demonstration showed attendees how powerful solar energy can be in urban spaces, especially when it captivates passers-by, just like the SmartFlower captured the attention of lots of attendees at the demo!

SmartFlower wants to wish a special thank you to Lisa Evans and Tim Smith, the co-Founders of We Grow Microgreens, Matt Lipsitz, and everyone who attended the event! It was a great way to celebrate Urban Agriculture Week in Boston!
