SmartFlower Tops Los Angeles Net Zero Sustainable Home

Sep 22, 2025

On September 3rd, members of the Greater Los Angeles Realtors Association (GLAR) Sustainability Working Group gathered in Santa Monica for an exclusive tour of a net zero sustainable home. The highlight of the tour was the iconic SmartFlower solar system, perched on homeowner Mike Wann’s flat roof which reduces environmental impact and increases property value.

A Home that Blends Design and Sustainability

With SmartFlower, Mike’s home blends architectural design with sustainability, representing the future of residential living. From the moment guests arrived, they were enthralled by the SmartFlower, and SmartFlower’s CEO Jim Gordon had the opportunity to speak to SmartFlower’s ingenuity. It’s more than solar panels, its beautiful design with a purpose. SmartFlower’s solar panels are shaped like petals to resemble sunflowers, and the panels open when the sun rises, follow the sun all day, and close at night. This sun following, or heliotropic, movement is inspired by how sunflowers blossom with the sun and helps SmartFlowers generate up to 40% more energy.

Why Realtors are Paying Attention

For realtors, sustainability is no longer a “nice-to-have.” Buyers are now looking for homes that are environmentally conscience with innovative technologies that enhance daily life and reduce energy costs. The SmartFlower proudly displayed on Mike’s roof demonstrates to realtors that innovative, clean energy solar solutions can boost property value and marketability.  The SmartFlower creates instant differentiation in the market, and it offers a compelling story to tell prospective buyers: sustainable living does not have to compromise on aesthetics.

Events like this highlight how the Los Angeles community is leading the shift toward more sustainable living, and doing it in a stylish, practical way.
